In Northeast Florida, your entryway is the frontline. Between the sand from the beach and the sudden rain showers we get in St. Augustine, your floors have to be able to take a literal beating. Tile is the obvious choice, but we get asked all the time: "Is there actually a difference between porcelain and ceramic?"
The short answer is yes—and for an entryway, the difference matters.
Ceramic: The Budget-Friendly Classic
Ceramic tile is a great, versatile option. It's usually more affordable and comes in thousands of styles. It's perfect for backsplashes or guest bathrooms. However, ceramic is slightly more porous than porcelain. In a high-traffic area where sand can grind into the surface, it can wear a little faster.
Porcelain: The Heavy-Hitter
Porcelain is fired at much higher temperatures than ceramic, which makes it incredibly dense and nearly waterproof.
Toughness: It's much harder to chip or crack.
Color-Through: On many porcelain tiles, the color goes all the way through the "body" of the tile. If you do manage to chip it, you won't see a different color underneath.
Which one should you pick?
If you're tiling a foyer or a mudroom where people are coming in from the beach, we almost always recommend porcelain. It's built to handle the grit and the moisture without breaking a sweat. Save the ceramic for the walls or the lower-traffic rooms.
Choosing the right tile is about matching the material to your lifestyle. We have hundreds of samples at James Flooring from brands you know and trust.
